이 논문은 조선 후기 문인 端磎 金麟燮(1827-1903)의 시집 『學言』을 중심으로 그의 생애, 창작 공간, 시 세계를 고찰한 연구이다. 『學言』은 김인섭이 1857년 11월부터 1858년 5월까지 서울에 체류하며 지은 시를 엮은 것이다. ‘학언’은 ‘갓난아기가 말을 배우는 수준’의 시라는 뜻이다. 즉 시를 짓는데 서툴다는 의미로, 자신의 작품에 대한 겸손한 표현이다. 󰡔學言』은 총 71제 100수로 구성되어 있으며, 모두 칠언율시 형식을 취하고 있다. 일부 작품은 김인섭의 문집인 『단계집』에도 수록되어 있다. 본고는 『學言』의 편찬 배경과 김인섭의 出仕期 삶을 연보와 『단계일기』, 『단계집』을 통해 정리하고, 창작 공간인 小桃源의 풍경과 의미를 분석하였다.

『學言』의 시 세계는 교유를 통한 정신적 연대, 유람을 통한 향유와 서정, 빈한한 삶을 초탈한 기상, 자아성찰 속 출처의 고뇌 등 네 가지 주제로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그는 서울에서의 체류 기간 동안 다양한 인물들과 교유하며 시를 주고받았고, 이를 통해 외로운 객지 생활을 위로받았다. 또한 도성의 풍경과 유람을 통해 자연과의 교감을 즐기며, 시를 통해 서정적 감정을 표현하였다. 빈한한 삶 속에서도 도덕적 지향을 잃지 않으려는 김인섭의 자세는 시 곳곳에 드러나며, 출처에 대한 고민을 통해 김인섭의 삶의 지향을 살펴보았다.

󰡔학언󰡕은 당대의 희로애락이 담겼을 뿐만 아니라, 향후 40여 년 동안 지속되는 학문관, 문학관, 출처관이 바로 이 시기에 확립되므로, 김인섭의 기저 의식을 살필 수 있는 주요 자료로 주목된다.

This study examines the life, creative space, and poetic world of the late Joseon government official and scholar Dan'gye(端磎) Kim In-seop(金麟燮, 1827–1903), focusing on his poetry collection Hak-eon(『學言』). Compiled during his stay in Seoul from November 1857 to May 1858, Hak-eon consists of poems written during this period. The title “Hak-eon,” meaning “Poetry like a newborn learning to speak,” reflects Kim’s humble view of his own poetic ability. The collection comprises 71 titles and 100 poems, all composed in the regulated seven-character eight-line verse(七言律詩) form. Some of these poems were later included in his collected works, the Dan'gyejip(『端磎集』).

This paper first reconstructs the background of Hak-eon’s compilation and Kim In-seop’s early official career(出仕期) using his diary(『端磎日記』) and collected writings. It then analyzes the symbolic and spatial significance of Sodo-won(小桃源), the secluded retreat in Seoul where most of the poems were composed. Sodo-won functioned not merely as a residence but as a space for literary and philosophical reflectio.

The poetic world of Hak-eon is explored through four thematic lenses: spiritual solidarity through friendship, lyrical enjoyment through travel, transcendence of poverty through moral integrity, and introspective anguish over the dilemma of public service versus reclusion. During his time in Seoul, Kim exchanged poems with various acquaintances, finding solace in literary companionship. His poems also reflect his appreciation of urban and natural landscapes, expressing refined emotional sensibilities. Despite his modest means, Kim maintained a strong ethical orientation, which is evident throughout his work. His internal conflict regarding the decision to serve or withdraw from public life reveals the depth of his moral and intellectual concerns.

Hak-eon not only captures the joys and sorrows of its time but also marks the formative period in which Kim’s lifelong views on scholarship, literature, and public duty were established. As such, it serves as a vital source for understanding the foundational consciousness that shaped his later intellectual and literary pursuits.
