본 연구는 국권침탈기와 일제 강점 중기라는 암흑기를 버텨낸 의령의 절의지사 周時範(1883-1932)의 문학에 대해 고찰한 것이다.

Ⅱ장 ‘한반도의 암흑기와 주시범의 문학적 대응’에서는 그의 삶을 세 시기로 나누어 내용상의 변천 과정을 살폈다. 주시범은 세계의 격변 속에서 효성·우애·자애를 실천하는 도덕적인 삶을 살았다. 그는 혼란을 헤쳐나가기 위해 자신의 聰明으로 세상 사람들과 교류하고 주체적으로 처신하였다. 성리학의 토대 위에서 세계의 문제를 진단하고, 외부의 압력에 타협하지 않는 꼿꼿한 절의 정신을 고수했으며, 자신이 본 혼란한 세상과 울울한 마음을 문학적으로 형상화하였다.

Ⅲ장 ‘주시범 문학의 특성과 가치’에서는 주시범의 문학이 지니는 인식적‧표현적‧미학적 특성과 현대적 시사에 대해 논하였다. 문학적 특성이란, 즉 인식적 측면에서 시간의 경과에 따라 시각이 ‘밖에서 안으로’ 이동하였다는 점, 표현적 측면에서 대비·상징·設疑 등의 기법으로 슬픔을 표출하였다는 점, 미학적 측면에서 장중미가 두드러진다는 점이다.

주시범의 문학은 첫째 소통과 연대의 가치를 보여주는 문학, 둘째 주체적 인간의 저항 정신을 보여주는 문학, 셋째 교육의 중요성을 일깨우는 문학이라는 점에서 오늘날 우리에게 큰 울림을 준다.

This study examines the literature of Ju Si-beom (1883-1932), a patriotic man from Uiryeong who survived the dark ages of the Japanese colonial period and the period of national annexation.

Chapter Ⅱ, ‘The Dark Ages of the Korean Peninsula and Ju Si-beom’s Literary Response,’ divides his life into three periods and examines the changes in content. In the midst of the world's upheaval, Ju Si-beom lived a moral life practicing filial piety, friendship, and fatherly love. He used his intelligence to interact with the people of the world and acted proactively to navigate the chaos. He diagnosed the world's problems on the basis of Neo-Confucianism, maintained an upright spirit of integrity that did not compromise with external pressure, and gave literary form to the chaotic world and gloomy feelings he saw.

Chapter 3, ‘Characteristics and Value of Ju Si-beom’s Literature,’ discusses the cognitive, expressive, and aesthetic characteristics of Ju Si-beom’s literature and its contemporary implications. The literary characteristics are that, in terms of perception, the perspective moves from the outside to the inside over time; in terms of expression, sadness is expressed through techniques such as contrast, symbolism, and interrogative forms; and in terms of aesthetics, solemnity is prominent. Joo Si-beom's literature resonates deeply with us today in the following ways: first, it demonstrates the values ​​of communication and solidarity; second, it demonstrates the spirit of resistance of independent human beings; and third, it reminds us of the importance of education.
