This study explores the integration of Multicultural andEnvironmental Education (MCEE) in elementary science educationby developing an MCEE analysis framework and applying it toSouth Korean third- and fourth-grade science textbooks. Usingcontent analysis of the 2015 environmental curriculum, relevantliterature, and 28 textbooks from seven publishers, the study examinesthe extent and nature of MCEE content in science education.

Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted toassess the frequency and depth of MCEE content elements, whileexpert validation ensured the framework’s reliability. Findingsreveal a misalignment between MCEE policy and its representationin textbooks, with limited emphasis on multicultural and environmentalvalues. However, the study also identifies opportunities forenhancing MCEE integration through textbook reframing and curriculumalignment. The results underscore the need to bridgevalues education and science education to promote inclusive andsustainable educational practices.
