본 논문은 미국 북장로교 선교사이자 승동교회 담임목사를 역임했으며 평양신학교 초대 실천신학교수였던 곽안련(Charles Allen Clark, 1878-1961)의 직분론을 고찰한다. 곽안련은 설교학, 목회학, 장로교 정치 등에서 막대한 영향을 미쳤으나, 그의 직분 이해에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 본 연구는 곽안련의 직분론을 그의 주요 저적들과 더불어 한국 장로교 헌법 형성사 및 네비우스 선교정책의 맥락 속에서 분석한다. 곽안련의 직분론은 성경적·전통적 접근과 교회법적 접근을 결합한 복합적 성격을 지닌다. 그는 네비우스 선교정책의 자립·자치·자전의 원리를 수용했으나, 교회 직분을 교회의 질서와 사역을 유지하기 위한 하나님의 은사적 제도로 이해했던 네비우스와는 달리 전통적 견해에 더 가까운 입장을 취한다. 또한 평양신학교에서 ‘교회정치’를 강의하며 장로교 헌법의 제정과 수정에 깊이 관여함으로써, 한국 초기 장로교회의 목사·장로·집사 직분의 역할과 권위를 규정하는 데 결정적인 공헌을 했다. 따라서 곽안련의 직분 이해는 단순한 행정적 규정이 아니라, 직분을 통한 교회의 영적 세움과 하나님의 주권적 부르심에 기초한 신학적 체계로 평가된다. 그의 직분론은 한국 장로교회의 정체성과 교회정치 형성에 신학적 근거를 제공한 토대적 업적으로 자리한다.

This study examines the doctrine of ecclesiastical office (직분론) in the theology of Charles Allen Clark (1878-1961), a missionary of the American Northern Presbyterian Church and the first professor of practical theology at Pyongyang Theological Seminary. While Clark’s contributions to homiletics, pastoral theology, and Presbyterian polity are well known, his understanding of church offices has received little scholarly attention. This paper investigates Clark’s view of office by situating it within three contexts: the historical development of Korean Presbyterian polity, the missiological principles of John L. Nevius, and Clark’s own writings such as Pastoral Theology (1925), Homiletics (1925), and The Korean Church and the Nevius Methods (1929).

Clark’s ecclesiology was shaped by both biblical and legaltheological concerns, reflecting a dual approach that integrates traditional scriptural interpretation and church-law related reasoning. His adaptation of the Nevius Method emphasized the self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating principles of the Korean church, within which church offices served as divinely instituted means of maintaining order and ministry. As a key translator and editor of early Presbyterian constitutional documents, Clark played a decisive role in defining the functions and authority of pastors, elders, and deacons in early Korean Presbyterianism.

By exploring his writings and influence, this study argues that Clark’s understanding of office was not merely administrative but deeply theological-rooted in the conviction that ecclesiastical offices are divine callings for service, discipline, and the edification of the body of Christ. His legacy in this regard laid the foundation for the ecclesial identity and polity of the Korean Presbyterian Church.
