본 논문은 제임스 스미스의 ‘문화 예전 기획’을 중심으로 그의 개혁파 공공신학적 기여와 한계를 밝힌다. 스미스는 아우구스티누스의 전통을 따라 인간을 욕망하는 존재로 규정하며, 하나님을 욕망하는 예배가 문화 변혁과 사회 회복의 기초임을 강조한다. 그의 기여는 네 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 예전을 문화 변혁의 핵심으로 삼았고, 둘째, 지성 중심의 세계관 교육을 넘어 습관 형성을 통한 전인적 제자도를 강조했으며, 셋째, 사회적 상상력을 통해 이원론적 신앙의 극복을 도모하였고, 넷째, 포스트모더니즘을 비판적으로 수용하면서도 개혁파 전통에 충실했다. 반면 그의 공공신학적 한계는 예배와 교회를 중심에 두었지만, 구체적 방안과 정책적 대안이 부족하였고, 그의 기독교적 주장과 논리가 비신자와 소통되도록 ‘이중언어’로 번역되지 못한 과제를 남겼다. 또한 비신자와 세속 사회에서 일하시는 하나님의 일반은총적 사역을 상대적으로 간과했으며, 지역적 상호 맥락성을 충분히 고려하지 않아 문화 예전 기획이 비서구권에서도 적용될 수 있을지에 의문을 남긴다. 그럼에도 스미스는 한국교회에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 코로나 이후 무너진 예배를 온라인이 아닌 몸으로 회복할 것, 포스트모더니즘을 비판적으로 수용하여 공공신학에 접목할 것, 현 사회와 세대를 복음의 상상력으로 바라보도록 공공신학적 감수성을 촉진한다. 비상계엄과 탄핵 이후 교회의 공적 책임이 다시 요구되는 이 시점에서, 본 논문은 개혁파 공공신학의 방향을 제시하는 시의적절한 연구로 사료된다.

This paper explores the contributions and limitations of James K. A. Smith’s Reformed public theology, focusing on his “Cultural Liturgical Project.” Following the Augustinian tradition, Smith defines humanity as homo desiderans(beings of desire) and emphasizes that worship desiring God provides the foundation for cultural transformation and social restoration. His contributions can be summarized in four points.

First, he places worship at the heart of cultural transformation. Second, he emphasizes holistic discipleship through habit formation, moving beyond intellectually centered worldview education. Third, he seeks to overcome dualistic faith through the cultivation of social imagination. Fourth, he critically engages with postmodernism while remaining faithful to the Reformed tradition.

Conversely, several limitations appear in his public theology. These include a focus on worship and the church without sufficient concrete strategies or policy alternatives, and a lack of translation of his Christian arguments into a “bilingual approach” accessible to non-believers. Furthermore, he relatively overlooks God’s common-grace work among non-believers and within secular society. His insufficient consideration of regional intercontextuality also raises questions about the applicability of his cultural liturgical project in non-Western contexts.

Nevertheless, Smith offers valuable insights for the Korean church. He calls for the restoration of post-pandemic worship through embodied participation rather than virtual engagement, the critical appropriation of postmodernism within public theology, and the cultivation of a publictheological sensibility that views contemporary society and generations through the imaginative lens of the gospel. At this historical juncturewhen the church’s public responsibility is again being demanded following martial law and impeachment, this study serves as a timely contribution, offering direction for Reformed public theology.
