본 연구는 EBS1 다큐멘터리 <다문화 고부열전> 캄보디아 며느리 편을 중심으로, 고부 갈등과 화해 상황에서 나타나는 비언어 의사소통의 특성을 분석하고 그 사회문화적 의미를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 8개의 에피소드를 선정하여, 시각적, 청각적, 촉각적, 공간･거리 모드로 구성된 멀티모달 분석을 수행하였다.

분석 결과 시어머니는 직시, 근접 거리 유지, 손짓, 표정, 어조 등을 통해 권위와 감정을 직접적으로 드러내며 지배적인 상호작용을 시도한 반면, 며느리는 시선을 피하거나 공간을 회피하는 등의 방어적 전략을 사용하였다. 그러나 일부 며느리들은 갈등 상황에서 직접 응시를 유지하고, 물건을 흔드는 등 비언어적 행위를 통해 감정과 입장을 직접적으로 표현하기도 하였다. 화해 장면에서는 촉각적 행위와 물리적 거리 축소를 통해 관계 회복의 제스처가 포착되었다.

이러한 결과는 캄보디아 며느리들이 언어적 제약 속에서도 비언어 자원을 활용해 갈등에 대응하고 문화적 정체성을 드러내며, 일부 며느리의 경우는 주체적 행위자로 나타남을 알려 준다. 그러나 프로그램은 방송 초반 며느리를 ‘문제적 타자’로 제시한 뒤, ‘포용의 대상’으로 전환하는 한국 중심의 다문화 수용 담론을 강화한다. 이는 다문화가족 내 갈등의 원인을 이질성에서 기인한 개인의 부적응으로 환원시키고, 한국적 가치 기준에의 수렴을 당연시하는 한계를 드러낸다.

본 연구는 특정 에피소드에 기반한 질적 분석으로 일반화에 한계가 있으나, 비언어 자원이 문화적 차이와 권력관계 속에서 어떻게 해석되고 기능하는지 살폈다는 점에서 의의가 있을 것이다. 또한 본 연구는 다문화 고부간 갈등 완화와 관계 개선을 위한 문화감수성 기반 소통 교육의 필요성을 시사한다.

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of nonverbal communication in conflict and reconciliation situations between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, as portrayed in the Cambodian daughter-in-law episodes of the EBS1 documentary series , and to explore their sociocultural meanings. To achieve this, eight episodes were selected and examined through multimodal analysis focusing on visual, auditory, tactile, and spatial/proxemic modes.

The analysis revealed that the mothers-in-law employed dominant interaction strategies, directly expressing authority and emotions through direct gaze, close physical proximity, gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice. In contrast, the daughters-in-law often used defensive strategies such as avoiding eye contact or physically distancing themselves. However, some daughters-in-law also demonstrated more assertive nonverbal behaviors—crossing arms, maintaining gaze, or shaking objects—to express emotions and assert their stance. In scenes of reconciliation, tactile behaviors and reduced physical distance were observed as gestures of restoring relationships.

These findings suggest that, despite linguistic limitations, Cambodian daughters-in-law utilize nonverbal resources to respond to conflict and express cultural identity. In some cases, they emerge as active agents within the interaction. However, the program's narrative arc—from portraying the daughter-in-law as a "problematic other" to a "tolerable other"—reinforces a Korea-centered multicultural discourse. This framing reduces the causes of conflict in multicultural families to individual maladjustment and implies an expectation of assimilation into Korean norms, highlighting the discursive limitations of the media portrayal.

While the study is based on qualitative analysis of selected episodes and thus has limitations in generalizability, it contributes by illuminating how nonverbal resources are interpreted and function within cultural differences and power dynamics. The findings also underscore the need for culturally sensitive communication education aimed at mitigating conflicts and improving relationships in multicultural in-law families.
