이 글은 1990년대 이후 동아시아 경제 지구화 과정에서 형성된 중국 다롄의 일본인사회가 2012년과 2020년이라는 두 전환점을 거치며 겪은 변동을 서비스 자영업자의 경험을 통해 고찰한다. 2013년부터 2025년까지의 현지조사를 바탕으로, 자본과 사람이 떠나는 장소에서 자영업자들이 직면한 현실과 실천을 경제･사회･문화적 측면에서 분석했다.

주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제적 측면에서 다롄의 일본인 서비스 자영업자들은 현지채용과 자영업 사이를 오가는 유동적 상태에 놓여 있다. 2012년 이후 대규모 업체의 철수로 소규모 창업이 증가했으나, 일본어와 일본문화의 시장 가치 하락으로 구조적으로 취약한 위치에 놓이게 되었다. 둘째, 사회적 측면에서 중국의 외국인 관리 강화는 고학력･고기술･고수입 조건에 부합하지 않는 자영업자들을 배제했으며, 이들은 비공식 제도에 의존하여 체류를 유지해왔다. 특히 거주지 등록 및 시민 신고제도는 외국인의 일상공간을 취약하게 만들어 법적 불안정성을 영속화했다. 셋째, 문화적 측면에서 현지 중산층이 일본 서비스업의 주요 고객으로 유입되면서 일본인과 현지인 간의 계층적 경계가 모호해지고 있다. 다롄이 구축한 ‘일본’ 연관 지역성은 국가 권력 강화로 균열되었으나, 일본계 자영업자들은 환경거품에서 코스모폴리탄 캐노피로의 전환, 식재료 현지화, 대중화 전략을 통해 ‘중국 속 일본’을 도시 문화의 한 층위로 재구성하고 있다.

본 연구는 탈지구화 국면에서 쇠퇴하는 이민 커뮤니티의 자영업자들이 경험하는 다층적 변동을 경제·사회·문화적 측면에서 분석함으로써, 동아시아 초국적 사회 연구에 새로운 분석 시각을 제시하고자 했다. 특히 중국 특유의 이민 관리 체계와 그 영향을 실증적으로 규명했으며, 자영업을 사회문화적 통합의 매개체로 재개념화했다는 점에서 학술적 의의를 지닌다.

This study examines the transformations of the Japanese community in Dalian, China, through the experiences of service sector self-employed workers, focusing on two critical turning points in 2012 and 2020 within the broader context of economic globalization in East Asia since the 1990s. Based on fieldwork conducted from 2013 to 2025, this research analyzes the realities and practices faced by self-employed workers in a locale from which capital and people are departing, from economic, social, and cultural perspectives.

The main findings are as follows. First, from an economic perspective, Japanese service sector self-employed workers in Dalian occupy a fluid position between local employment and self-employment. While small-scale entrepreneurship increased following the withdrawal of large-scale enterprises after 2012, these workers became structurally vulnerable due to the declining market value of Japanese language proficiency. Second, from a social perspective, China's strengthened foreigner management system has excluded self-employed workers who do not meet the criteria of high education, high skills, and high income, forcing them to rely on informal institutions to maintain their residency. The residence registration system and citizen reporting networks have rendered foreigners' everyday spaces vulnerable, perpetuating legal precarity. Third, from a cultural perspective, as the local middle class with Japanese language proficiency has become the primary clientele of Japanese service businesses, class boundaries between Japanese and locals have become blurred. While the regional identity associated with “Japan” that Dalian constructed has fractured due to strengthened state power, Japanese self-employed workers are reconstituting “Japan within China” as a layer of urban culture through transitions from environmental bubbles to cosmopolitan canopies, localization of ingredients, and mass-market strategies.

This study contributes to transnational society research in East Asia by empirically analyzing China's distinctive immigration management system and its impacts, and by reconceptualizing self-employment as a medium of sociocultural integration.
