While prevailing scholarship on T. S. Eliot’s relationship with women has predominantly scrutinized the influence of his wives and female confidantes, this study shifts the critical lens toward the foundational role of his mother, Charlotte Champe Eliot, teacher, poet, and writer. Departing from traditional Freudian and Jungian interpretations that have long characterized psychoanalytic Eliot studies, this paper employs a Lacanian framework to provide a radical appraisal of Eliot’s poetic evolution. By centering the analysis on Ash-Wednesday, this research traces a transformative ontological trajectory: from the primordial abyss of suffering and maternal bond to the attainment of spiritual Subject adulthood and transcendence. Through the application of Lacanian coordinates, specifically the Big Other, Regard/Gaze, and the formation of the Lacanian Subject, this paper explores how Eliot navigates the blackhole of pain to secure subjective liberation. The Dancing Subject emerges as the catalyst through which Eliot reaches the ‘bright light of the bones’ as depicted in Ash-Wednesday. In conclusion, this paper repositons Eliot as the poet of the triumphant Lacanian Subject, one who has emancipated himself from the distortions of existential suffering.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
