본 연구는 T. S. 엘리엇의 ｢J. 알프레드 프루프록의 연가｣를 융의 분석심리학과 MBTI 인지기능 모델을 해석적 틀로 활용하여 재해석함으로써 사회적 소외와 존재론적 불안에 초점을 맞춰 온 기존 모더니즘 비평을 확장하고자 한다. MBTI가 성격심리학 내에서 논쟁적인 비임상적 모델임을 전제한 가운데, 본 논문은 이를 진단적 유형론이 아니라 분석적 언어로 제한하여 사용한다. 이러한 관점에서 프루프록의 내적 독백은 INFJ 인지기능 배열과 연관된 경향성의 차원에서 고찰되며, 내향 직관(Ni), 외향 감정(Fe), 내향 사고(Ti), 외향 감각(Se) 간의 상호작용에 주목한다. 분석 결과, Ni는 상징적 시간 투사를 조직하고, Fe는 사회적 평가에 대한 민감성을 강화하며, Ti는 성찰적 자기 점검을 매개하고, 상대적으로 약화한 Se는 추상적 인식과 실제 경험 사이의 간극을 두드러지게 하는 것으로 나타난다. 본 연구는 인지기능 담론과 면밀한 텍스트 분석을 결합함으로써 모더니즘 시의 심리적 의식 구조를 탐구하기 위한 잠정적 해석 틀을 제안한다.

This study reinterprets T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by engaging Carl Jung’s analytical psychology in conjunction with the MBTI cognitive function model as an interpretive framework, extending analysis beyond conventional modernist readings of social alienation and existential anxiety. While acknowledging that MBTI remains a contested and non-clinical model within personality psychology, this research employs its cognitive functions as an analytical vocabulary rather than a diagnostic typology. From this perspective, Prufrock’s interior monologue is explored in relation to tendencies associated with an INFJ functional alignment, focusing on the interaction of Introverted Intuition (Ni), Extraverted Feeling (Fe), Introverted Thinking (Ti), and Extraverted Sensing (Se). The analysis suggests that Ni structures symbolic temporal projection, Fe intensifies sensitivity to social evaluation, Ti mediates reflective self-scrutiny, and attenuated Se highlights the gap between abstract cognition and lived experience. By integrating cognitive-function discourse with close textual analysis, this study proposes a tentative interpretive framework for examining the psychodynamic organization of modernist poetic consciousness.
