이 소논문은 1945년부터 1979년까지 베트남전에 참여한 참전 용사의 증언과 회상으로부터 구술자료를 수집하는 프로젝트의 현황에 대한 종합적인 논의다. 2025년 현재 베트남전에 참전했던 많은 증인들이 고령화되어가고 있다는 점을 고려할 때 구술 자료의 수집은 조속히 시행되어야 하지만, 지금까지 여러 가지 이유로 인해 구술 자료 수집 프로젝트의 진행은 체계적이지 못하고 전문성이 부족한 모습을 드러냈다. 구술은 과거 경험에 대한 참여자의 관점을 강조하는 질적 인터뷰 방법 중 하나다. 이 방법은 인류학에서 유래된 방법으로, 현지인들의 생활방식, 관습, 가치관 등을 이해하기 위해 현장 연구 방법을 오랫동안 사용해 왔다. 하지만 베트남에서는 이 방법이 연구의 목적, 특히 기록학 분야에서 회상으로부터 자료를 추출하는 데 아직 널리 사용되지 않고 있다. 이에 따라 저자는 본 연구를 통해 베트남전 참전 용사로부터 구술자료를 수집하는 프로젝트가 잠재적인 자료원으로서 가치가 높다고 판단할 수 있는 근거를 제시하는 동시에 구술 인터뷰와 관련된 관계자, 특히 기록 보관소의관심과 투자를 촉진하기 위해 위 주제 (베트남전 참전 용사와 관련된 주제)에 대한 구술자료의 수집 및 활용과 관련한 몇 가지 의견을 제시하고자 한다.

Oral history is a qualitative interviewing method that emphasizes participants' perspectives on their own past experiences. Rooted in anthropology, this approach— often associated with ethnographic fieldwork—has long been used by field researchers to access the experiential knowledge of indigenous peoples. In Vietnam, however, oral history remains underutilized as a tool for accessing memory-based sources in academic research, particularly in archival studies.

This article provides an overview of current initiatives by archival institutions and research groups that collect oral histories from veterans who witnessed the wars in Vietnam between 1945 and 1979. The findings suggest that these oral history projects offer a valuable yet time-sensitive source of documentation, given the advanced age of many witnesses. Despite their potential, these efforts are often unsystematic and lack methodological rigor. To address these challenges, the author offers several recommendations aimed at encouraging greater attention and investment— especially from archival institutions—in the collection and promotion of oral history materials related to this topic.
