네덜란드 개혁신학자인 헤르만 바빙크는 객관적 계시와 주관적 계시가 상응해서 신앙이 발생하며, 자율적인 주체가 아닌 하나님의 소생으로서 계시 의존적인 인간의 의식 속에 신앙을 일으키는 분은 성령 하나님이라고 주장한다. 그런데 바빙크의 주관적 계시 이해에 대하여 주관주의, 현대신학의 영향, 그리고 친 슐라이어마허적 성향 등에 관한 비판이 제기되었다. 이에 본 논문은 바빙크에게 제기된 비판의 적실성 여부를 검토하였으며, 슐라이어마허 신학의 특징을 논하고 그에 대한 바빙크의 해석과 비판에 대해 논구하였다. 그 결과 바빙크가 그의 신학과 인식론을 현대적 기반으로 개조했다고 볼 수 없으며, 주관적 계시 이해에서 그가 슐라이어마허의 자의식 개념을 전용한 것이 아니라 비판적으로 평가했다고 보는 것이 합당하다. 바빙크는 교의학자로서 시대적 문제를 해결하기 위해 계몽주의와 자유주의 신학의 파도를 거슬러 계시중심적인 개혁신학을 바로 세우고자 하였다. 따라서 그의 신학적 인식론은 역사적 개혁주의 안에서 수용 가능한 일관성을 유지한다.

Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck argued that faith arises from the correspondence between objective and subjective revelation, and that the Holy Spirit, the One who generates faith in human consciousness, is not an autonomous subject but rather a divinely inspired being dependent on revelation. However, Bavinck's understanding of subjective revelation has been criticized for subjectivism, the influence of modern theology, and his pro-Schleiermacherian leanings. This paper examines the validity of these criticisms, discusses the characteristics of Schleiermacher's theology, and argues Bavinck's interpretations and critiques of it. Therefore, it is clear that Bavinck never changed his theology and epistemology on a modern basis. It is more appropriate to say that he did not simply adopt Schleiermacher's concept of self-consciousness in his understanding of subjective revelation, but rather critically evaluated it. As a dogmatic theologian, Bavinck sought to establish a revelation-centered Reformed theology by countering the tides of the Enlightenment and liberal theology to address contemporary issues. Therefore, his theological epistemology maintains a consistent and acceptable framework within historical Reformed theology.
