This study explored how guideline handouts functioned as structured cognitive supports for the argumentation and learning processes of students in a university debate course, and focused on students’ perceptions of argumentation-related learning experiences. Debate-based classes place high cognitive and communicative demands on learners, particularly in understanding complex social issues and organizing coherent arguments. To address these demands, the study examined how structured guidance facilitated argument development and reasoning processes, drawing on perspectives from cognitive support and instructional design. The study was conducted with students enrolled in a debate-centered university course, and qualitative data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that students perceived the guideline handouts as providing cognitive and organizational support for (1) clearer understanding of debate topics, (2) structured reasoning and organization of claims and supporting ideas, and (3) reduced cognitive burden during debate preparation and participation. Furthermore, the findings highlight students’ recognition of the broader applicability of structured reasoning strategies encountered in debate activities. By illustrating how instructional design-based support tools shape argumentative thinking and engagement in higher education contexts, this study offers pedagogical implications for designing effective debate-based instruction in university classrooms.
