본 연구는 2022 개정 국가교육과정에 따라 개발된 한국 고등학교 영어 I과 영어 II 교과서의 말하기 활동 분포를 국제 바칼로레아 디플로마 프로그램(International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, IBDP) 영어 B 교과서와 비교하고, 활동 유형 전반에 걸친 한국 고등학생의 지각된 유용성과 흥미를 분석하였다. 총 15종 교과서에서 추출한 말하기 활동 638개를 구조적 활동, 준의사소통 활동, 기능적 활동, 사회적 상호작용 활동의 네 범주로 분류하였다. 또한 한국 고등학생 68명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 지각된 유용성과 흥미를 측정하였다. 분석 결과, 한국 교과서는 사전 의사소통 및 준의사소통 중심의 연습 활동에 비중이 높고, 의사소통적 산출 활동은 상대적으로 적게 제시되는 경향이 나타났다. 반면 IBDP 영어 B 교과서는 의미 있는 상호작용을 촉진하는 보다 실제적이고 개방적인 활동을 더 많이 제공하였다. 학습자들은 경험 서술, 창의적 발표, 시각 자료 설명 활동을 유용하고 흥미롭게 지각한 반면, 토의·토론 활동은 흥미는 높지만 유용성은 상대적으로 낮게 인식하였다. 이러한 결과는, 한국 교과서의 활동 분포와 학습자 인식 간에는 불일치가 존재하며, 향후 교과서 개발에서는 보다 의사소통적이고 학습자 중심의 말하기 활동을 확대할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

This study compares speaking activity distributions in Korean High School English I and English II textbooks based on the 2022 Revised National Curriculum with those in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) English B textbooks and examines Korean students’ perceived usefulness and interest across activity types. A corpus of 638 speaking activities from 15 textbooks was classified into four categories: structural, quasi-communicative, functional, and social interaction activities. Survey data from 68 Korean high school students assessed perceived usefulness and interest. Korean textbooks emphasize pre-communicative and quasi-communicative practice, whereas communicative production activities occur less often. In contrast, IBDP English B materials offer more authentic, open-ended activities promoting meaningful interaction. Experience descriptions, creative presentations, and visual description activities were perceived as useful and interesting, while discussions and debates were highly interesting but less useful. Overall, the findings suggest a mismatch between Korean textbook activity distributions and learners’ perceptions, indicating the need for more communicative, learner-centered speaking activities in future textbook development.
