Directed by Gu Xiaogang and released in 2019, ＜Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains＞ represents a significant shift in contemporary Chinese cinema. Originally a documentary filmmaker, Gu dedicated two years to this production, which subsequently garnered international acclaim following its invitation to the Critics’ Week at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by classical poetry and the Yuan Dynasty literati painting by Huang Gongwang, the film employs a “literati-like brushwork” to depict the symbiotic relationship between nature and humanity.

Departing from the high-contrast palettes, primitive motifs, and frenetic pacing characteristic of the Fifth Generation’s national epics and urban narratives, Gu’s work embraces a refined traditional aesthetic. This shift reflects a deliberate effort by a post-reform generation of directors—raised in an era of prosperity and globalization—to synthesize realist documentary techniques with cultural heritage.

By utilizing the Western medium of film to capture the lived realities of a small town, Fuyang, Gu transcends mere imitation; he integrates traditional Chinese spatial perspectives and spiritual depths into the cinematic form. Ultimately, the film serves as a contemplative discourse on kinship, regional identity, and subtle social critique, signaling a new direction for Chinese cinema that navigates the intersection of historical reverence and modern visual storytelling.
