This study examines the life trajectory of Gukpo(菊圃) Lee Gyo-yeop(李敎曄, 1863~1943), a reclusive scholar from the Geochang region who lived through the Late Period of Joseon and the Japanese colonial period, focusing on his scholarly exchanges with his teacher Myeonu Gwak Jong-seok and his moral friendship with his companion Gujae Jeong Jae-seong.
When Gwak Jong-seok was staying in Dajeon, Geochang-gun, in 1896, Gukpo sought his guidance, asking questions and receiving answers concerning the principles of conduct and various issues in Neo-Confucianism. This provided a steadfast foundation that enabled Gukpo to remain devoted to learning and to pursue ‘Learning for One’s Self-Cultivation and Practice (Wigijihak)’ unwaveringly, even throughout the turbulent era. In addition, through a lifelong scholarly companionship with Gujae Jeong Jae-seong, Gukpo engaged in continuous mutual refinement. Based on this relationship, he sought to attain the ultimate source of learning through consistent and dedicated effort. Moreover, amidst the somber reality of losing national sovereignty to Japanese imperialism, Gukpo strove to lead a life of principled action, clearly discerning right from wrong and upholding righteousness. This can be interpreted as both a warning against and a critique of hypocritical behavior that outwardly claims justice while failing to embody it internally, as well as a resolute rejection of compromising one’s integrity by pandering to secular power. Furthermore, Gukpo sought to fulfill his own role in preserving the national spirit during a period of national crisis by honoring and inheriting the spirit of loyalty of his 16th-generation ancestor, Go-eun Lee Ji-hwal, and by stimulating the value of filial piety through his works.
Gukpo’s life of seclusion in his hometown, dedicated entirely to scholarly pursuits, signifies a disconnection from contemporary politics. This can be evaluated as a passive form of resistance against Japanese colonial rule and as part of his effort to preserve national identity in his own way.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
