This study aims to reinterpret the literary works of Han Kang, who has explored the origins of violence and the intrinsic suffering of human existence at the forefront of contemporary Korean literature, through a critical and reflective perspective of the Christian worldview. While the author fully respects the “literary value” and “symbolic validity” of the “aesthetic imagination” manifested in Han Kang’s works, this research seeks to examine the theological limitations discovered when filtering the author’s internal world—embedded within various works—through the lens of a Christian worldview. Therefore, moving beyond mere literary commentary, this study examines the metaphysical implications permeating the author’s overall narrative and provides a comparative review of phenomenological analysis and Christian theological value systems. To this end, key texts encapsulating the author’s system of thought are selected to analyze the underlying anthropological insights and secular worldviews. Furthermore, by comparing the author’s thematic consciousness against the framework of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation (Restoration)—the core values of the Christian worldview—this study dialectically considers the longing for divinity and human finitude projected in literary representation from a theological level.
The worldview of Han Kang’s literature is examined from three major perspectives. First is the understanding of the human being. While Han Kang perceives human sinfulness as ontological suffering by substituting it with the code of “violence,” she seeks a path of “denial of existence” or “self-salvation” by negating human identity and attempting to transform into plants or spirits. Second is the ambiguity of boundaries and pantheistic thought. The author realizes postmodern plurality by breaking down the temporal boundaries between the present and the afterlife, and life and death, allowing the memories of the deceased to coexist in the present. Third is the integration with traditional Korean shamanistic spirituality. Through narrative strategies of “possession” and “invocation of the dead,” Han Kang attempts to resolve the grudges of the deceased and heal historical trauma. This can be described as aesthetic mourning and consolation through the act of “writing.” In this way, Han Kang’s literature achieves an aesthetic of “horizontal empathy” that reaches down to touch the depths of human suffering. This deeply resonates with the “existential pain” of modern individuals living as isolated selves. Thus, the author seeks to resolve the problem of suffering through shamanistic narratives and horizontal solidarity with others, rather than through the external intervention of divine grace. However, this orientation reveals a fundamental theological gap with the Christian worldview, which seeks an ultimate alternative in “vertical grace” and the “hope of resurrection” based on the premise of the “total depravity” of humanity.
This study holds theological significance as it responds to the existential questions posed by Han Kang’s literature and reminds us of the ethical responsibility of Christianity to present clear truth and the restoration of the created order beyond the nihilism and despair of contemporary literature.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
