이 논문에서는 1970년대 발간되었던 ‘문학비평용어사전’ 간행의 의의를 그 사전들의 기획 의도, 그리고 그 사전들이 문학 용어를 정리한 방식과 관련하여 분석했다. 김윤식은 Roger Fowler가 1973년 편찬하여 발간한 A Dicitionary of Modern Critical Term의 상당 부분을 번역했고, 그 사전에 담겨 있지 않는 내용들을 일부 포함하여 1976년 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕을 간행했다. 1976년은 오늘날 2026년에도 발간되고 있는 이상섭의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕이 출간된 해이기도 하다. 두 사전은 모두 ‘문학비평’을 표제어로 사용하고 있으며 1970년대의 논자들 사이에서 문학비평 용어에 대한 합의가 이루어지고 있지 않다는 점을 지적하고 있다는 공통점을 지닌다.

‘문학비평용어사전’의 발간 행위는 특정 용어들을 선택한 후 그 어휘들을 배치하는 과정에서 편술자의 기획 의도를 일정 부분 드러내게 된다. 이 논문에서는 1970년대 발간된 문학 관련 사전들의 기획 의도, 그리고 그 사전들에서 문학용어를 정립하는 방식과 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕의 방법이 차이를 드러내는 지점에 주목했다. 또한 1970년대 발간된 김윤식의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕, 이상섭의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕의 의의를 분석한 후 양자의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕이 지니는 차이점 또한 분석하려 했다.

김윤식의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕은 Roger Fowler의 사전을 번역했고, 1970년대 비평언어가 유동하고 있는 상황을 포착하여 비평언어의 변화 가능성을 드러내려 한 그 사전의 문제의식을 소개했다. 더 나아가 김윤식은 그 사전에 담겨 있지 않지만 당대의 문단에서 통용되기 시작한 용어들을 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕에 포함시켰다. 이는 ‘신비평’의 한계를 극복하는 문학 연구 방법을 모색하고 있던 당대 비평계의 문제의식을 사전에 등재하려 한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 반면 이상섭의 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕은 서양의 문학 용어를 일반화된 표제로 설정한 후 한국 내지 동양문학과 관련된 내용을 그 일반 용어의 특수한 내용, 혹은 특수한 사례로 서술하고 있다. 그러한 일반화 작업은 서양의 문학용어사전을 토착화하려 시도한 것으로 볼 수 있으며 1970년대의 다른 문학 사전들과 이상섭 󰡔문학비평용어사전󰡕의 차이를 드러내는 부분이기도 하다. 이 논문은 이들의 비평용어사전 편술 작업이 오늘날 문학이론 및 문학비평을 새롭게 제도화하려는 작업에 어떤 시사점을 던져주는지를 탐색하려 했다.

This study aims to analyze the significance of the publication of the ‘Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms’ in the 1970s in relation to the planning intentions of those dictionaries and the methods by which they organized literary terms. Kim Yun-sik translated a significant portion of A Dictionary of Modern Critical Term, compiled and published by Roger Fowler in 1973, and published the Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms in 1976, including some content not found in that dictionary. 1976 is also the year that Lee Sang-sup’s Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms, which is still being published today in 2026, was published. Both dictionaries share a commonality in that they use ‘literary criticism’ as a headword and point out that there was no consensus on literary criticism terminology among discussers in the 1970s.

The act of publishing a ‘Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms’ incorporates, to some extent, the compiler’s planning intentions in the process of selecting specific terms and arranging those vocabulary. This study focused on the planning intentions of literature-related dictionaries published in the 1970s, the methods used to establish literary terms in those dictionaries, and the points where the methods of the ‘Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms’ differ. Furthermore, after analyzing the significance of Kim Yun-sik’s ‘Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms’ and Lee Sang-seop’s ‘Dictionary of Literary Criticism Terms’ published in the 1970s, this paper also sought to highlight the differences between the two ‘Dictionaries of Literary Criticism Terms.’
