In this two-volume set, Creedy (economics, U. of Melbourne) gathers together a number of journal-published papers written in the 1980s and 1990s, and highlights some of their themes in an extended introduction. The subject is "a money measure of the change in welfare, experienced by a single individual, that results from a change in prices. Such a measure is provided by the change in the cost of reaching a specified indifference curve." (from the introduction). Topics considered include the basic concepts of welfare change, in particular the compensating and equivalent variations and measures of the excess burden arising from taxation; several responses that have been adopted to attempt to solve the problem; excess burdens in the context of income taxation and labor supply variation, which leads to the subject of the marginal welfare cost of taxation and of public funds; and finally, approaches to providing exact measures of welfare change for different groups. The 56 articles are from such journals as American Economic Review, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics , and Fiscal Studies . The volumes are not indexed. Annotation c.
