The social construction of health and illness has come to be one of the major lines of investigation in medical sociology. Attempting to provide representation to the main strands of the field, Shaw (School of Sociology and Social Policy, U. of Nottingham, UK) and Kauppinen (Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, U. of Helsinki, Finland) collect nine papers that investigate, among other topics, comparative lay understandings of health in Moscow and Helsinki, the growing medicalization of understandings of depression, justifications offered by lay people in their resistance to vaccination, and how understandings of health impact the way Chinese people in Britain differentially use Chinese and western medicine.
