The sociological work of Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) has been interpreted in a variety of ways by people like Henri Levi Strauss, who has suggested that it was a theoretical contribution to structuralism; Baudrillard, who attached it to general theories of symbolic exchange; or even those who have argued that it does not constitute a coherent and systematic whole. Resolving these debates, according to the author of the introduction to this volume, requires understanding of Mauss's methodological writings, of which two principal essays are presented here: Sociology (1901)--written in collaboration with Paul Fauconnet--and Sociology: Its Divisions and Their Relative Weightings (1927).
