Abstract 185
The purpose of this study is to analyze Korean high school curriculum and Korean textbook and consider the feature of Modern novels carried in 2007 Korean National Curriculum. The features of Modern Novel are following
1) Centrifugal force and centripetal force of community : Novels in textbooks aim for community. Community can be actualized with "family" or "race". The concept of "family" and "race" show up in novels. The novels present the scenes in which community is strengthened, which means, and community is collapsed, which means. Whether the presence of centripetal or centrifugal force depends on the desire of recovering community or complaint of current society. In addition, the Korean traditional culture in text books plays an important role to develop centrifugal force and the fetter in Japanese colonial rule of Korea and Korean war also are important to strengthen centripetal force.
2) The Challenge of new period : Because of the demand for the new era, Korean curriculum has changed and the textbooks have been revised. To meet the demand, accordingly, new textbooks started to include Modern novels and they could accommodate the challenge of the new era, which can be definitized with Capitalism.
The first matter is the current situation where our society moves toward uniformity. In the point of view of literature, the uniformity of the centripetal force is detrimental to Korean language. Especially, the centripetal force makes the standard language deepen, which means the Korean literature needs to be the center of centrifugal force. The strategy we should have is to conserve vernacular and dialect.
The second matter is Materialism of our society which makes human alienation and environmental pollution. The consequence of the centripetal force should be return of economic boost, however, which leads threat to the human beings and their life in the point of the literature. The strategy we should keep is that we create atmosphere where we can conserve the environment and literature-friendly society.
The third matter is the change of popular novels textbooks include. The popular novels should be educationally approved whether they are worthwhile or not because they have only been approved by commerce reason rather than artistic reason. This paper has an intention to find the cause of popularity through the context of the interests and investigate the limitation and value of the popular novels considering the literal substance.
3) The change and intensification of the literal education
First of all, to improve the value of the literal education, there should be three reading methods, which can lead to the meaningful changes. The most important thing in reading and writing is to apply the novel situation of the internal logic and motive. "Composition body" presents flexible design, which can enable the writers and readers to approach plot in detail. "Composition body" helps the integration between higher and lower composition and develop the creativity of readers through anticipation. Also, The novels in textbooks should reflect the literally benefits and develop the culture community shares. In this paper, we considered the merits of the In-hoon Choi's novel, such as creativity and unique feature within Korean tradition. In the end, through Cheong Joon, Lee's novel, I stressed that readers have to recognize the importance of the inferencing process. With these, the novel education can be better.
4) The integration and extension of the novel education
Novels requires reading skills a lot among other skills. However, they need to use for listening, speaking, writing skills, which is so called "extended use". In addition, novel-education needs to be integrated with other subjects, especially, through integration of the social study, it can results in better fruitful outcome by deepening the understandings. The reason is that social study can provide the background knowledge of the period when the literature was written. On the other hand, the emotion students experience in literature can expand' the understandings of the society. Also, Considering the fact that literature reflect the history and society, we can expect the positive side of the integration between social and novel education.
Private initiated-textbook authorization will result in the variety of the textbooks and expand the responsibility. Sooner or later, there will be more variables and demand to consider than we have in the age of traditional government initiated textbook authorization. Although there will be unexpected difficulties, I hope that the selecting process of literature work and literature class in service can be better through this discussion.
This paper is limited to the observation and analysis rather than suggestion of the new era. I suggest that educators need to consider the necessity of integration with other subjects, especially, social study. Also, I did not analysis what really happens in the actual classroom yet.
