본 연구의 목적은 청소년기의 특징으로 의미 있는 타자들과의 유대감을 강조하는 입장에서 가족, 교사, 친구와의 사회적 관계에 따라 청소년의 흡연경험에 차이가 있을 것으로 기대하고 그 영향력을 밝히는 데 있다. 특히 청소년들의 흡연 시작에서 중요한 시기인 중학교 2학년 학생들에 주목하여, 한국청소년패널자료 중 2003년 중2시기 자료를 이용하였다. 이 연구에서 설명변수는 사회적 관계 특성, 일반적 특성(개인적 특성, 가정의 사회경제적 배경) 변수들이며, 종속변수는 최근 1년간의 흡연경험여부로 측정되었다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과 성별, 음주여부, 흡연친구의 존재, 주관적 빈곤 인식, 한 달 평균 용돈, 스트레스와 사회적 관계 중 부모의 감독, 학대, 친한 친구 애착이 흡연과 유의미한 연관성이 있는 것을 확인하였다. 다른 변수들을 통제했을 때에도 피학 경험과 친한 친구 애착은 흡연에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 변수인 것으로 나타났다. 성별에 따라서는 남자에서는 부모감독이, 여자에서는 학교친구와의 관계에서 특히 흡연에 미치는 영향의 양상이 다르게 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다.
