EFG (edge-defined film-fed growth) solar cell fabrication is still an important process because of its cost effectiveness compared with crystalline silicon (c-Si). In our work, a new technique called vapor texturing was used to achieve effective texturing of EFG-Si. Texturing using an acidic solution was performed on p-type EFG-Si wafers with resistivity 0.5–2 Ω·cm and thickness 300 ㎛ using HF:HNO_3:CH_3COOH:DI water in the volume ratio 8:21:10:8 for 3 min. An etching depth of about 4 ㎛ was achieved on both sides of EFG-Si wafers. The acid treated EFG-Si wafers were textured again using vapor by a mixture of HF and HNO_3 in the volume ratio 7:3 with 8 g of Si. The average surface reflectance of EFG-Si wafers subjected to one step acid texturing and two step acid texturing including vapor texturing were found to be 22.30% and 5.04%, respectively. The sheet resistance of EFG-Si wafers subjected to one step and double step acid texturing were 85 Ω/sq and 50 Ω/sq, respectively after phosphorous doping. After effective drive-in process accompanied by surface passivation, a sheet resistance of about 45 Ω/sq was achieved for both types of wafers subjected to two different texturing schemes. The effective minority carrier lifetime after vapor texturing and SiNx:H deposition was about 19.54 ㎲. SEM analysis of the surface morphology shows clear changes after each process.
