초록보기

This study examines transformation and expansion of traditional fairy tales which seem to convey strict lessons and morals, through the various parodized versions of The Three Little Pigs. In the times of oral storytelling, storyteller’s role was crucial when they let the audiences listen to stories. They made some modification while adding or deleting some aspects of the stories for interacting with the audiences.

Marshall’s The Three Little Pigs follows the traditional story line, but his pictures show some different aspects which make the readers think of the gaps between the story and reality. Stehr’s The Three Little Pigs changes the brothers into the sisters, whose main goal of the life is to get married. However, only the third pig who doesn’t care about the marriage is survived from the wolf’s threat. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs lets the readers think of the point of view. The big bad wolf excuses that his behavior results from his diet, not from his bad personality. The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig demonstrates that the roles of the traditional fairy tales are not fixed. By the uncomfortable happy-ending, the author challenges the stereotyped stories and characters. The Three Pigs shows a new story which is a mixture of the sources from the various stories. Through exciting adventures after breaking the original story, the pigs can make their own happy-ending story. At the end of the story, the roles of victims and criminals are reversed.

Through these various versions of the traditional stories, we can realize that the story is not fixed within a certain frame. It is alive, changing continuously, expanding toward the wider world.
