본 연구는 개인의 소득재분배 선호를 결정하는 다양한 요인 중 문화변수를 중심으로 개인과 국가 수준의 변수를 포함한 분석모형을 제시하여, 복합적 측면에서의 문화 및 주요 변수들의 영향력을 관찰하였다. 집단-격자 문화이론을 적용해서 문화변수를 체계적･포괄적으로 측정하였으며, 이를 위해 EVS(European Value Survey) 자료를 사용하였다. 분석 대상과 시점은 12개 유럽 국가의 1990년 및 2008-2009년의 두 개 시점으로 하였고 위계선형모형을 사용하였다. 분석결과, 소득재분배에 영향을 미칠 것으로 판단된 집단변수는 개인의 소득재분배 선호에 독립적인 영향을 미치지 못하였으나, 소득 및 정치이념과의 상호작용을 통해서 소득재분배 선호에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 개인의 문화적 정향이 그 자체로는 소득재분배에 대한 영향력이 크지 않지만, 다른 개인적 수준의 특성과 상호작용하면서(수준 내 상호작용) 그 영향력이 유의미하게 발현되었음(예를 들면 개인의 집단적 성향이 자신의 소득과 연계되었을 때는 유의미한 영향력으로 나타남)을 발견하였다. 이러한 발견은 차후 집단-격자 문화이론을 계량적인 실증연구로 발전시켜감에 있어 시사하는 바가 크다.
