This study examines Korean (n)un as a marker for information structure, and identifies its three functions such as topic, topical contrast, and focal contrast markers. In particular, it argues that (n)un marks focal contrast as well as topical contrast. Four pieces of evidence are provided for the distinction between topical contrast marker (n)un and focal contrast marker (n)un: substitutability of a case marker for contrast marker (n)un, pragmatic implicature vs. semantic entailment, categorical differences of the constituents accompanied by topical/focal contrast markers, and word order.

This study treats contrast as providing a partial information, which can be represented by strategy. Strategy is a hierarchical discourse structure in which QUD (question under discussion) is divided into sub-questions, and only one of them is answered. Furthermore, the separation of focal contrast marker (n)un from topical contrast marker (n)un is supported by the fact that the strategy for topical contrast marker (n)un is formed from conjunction of sub-questions whereas that for focal contrast marker (n)un from inclusive disjunction of them.
