본 연구는 코로나19의 대유행 속에서 태평양을 가로지르는 미국과 중국의 대결 양상을 분석한다. 트럼프 행정부의 출범 이후 미·중 ‘무역전쟁’이 폭발했는데 2년에 걸친 양국의 전투는 제한적 합의로 귀결되었다. 그러나 코로나19의 대유행 이후 합의의 이행은 사실상 어려워졌고 시장경제와 비시장경제라는 경제모형의 대결은 방역모형과 백신을 둘러싼 경쟁으로 심화되었다. 게다가 미국 의회와 행정부가 미국과 중국의 ‘전략적 경쟁’을 공식화한 상황에서 양국은 동아시아 지역 경제통합과 군사안보질서를 둘러싸고 충돌하는 양상을 보였다. 이 같은 미·중의 전략적 경쟁은 ‘세계적 공공재’를 제공하는 것이 아니라 ‘세계적 공공악’을 야기하고 있다는 측면에서 ‘세계 헤게모니’를 둘러싼 경쟁으로 이해되기 어렵다.
