본 연구는 한국 사회에서 불평등과 공정성에 대한 논쟁이 격화된 시기의 경제적 불평등 인식 추이 변화를 기록하고, 그 원인을 실증적으로 분석한다. 경제적 불평등 인식 결정요인 분석틀을 제시한 선행 연구를 출발점으로 삼아 분석 시기와 자료, 방법론 등에서 다양한 확장을 시도했다. 첫째, 경제적 불평등 인식 추이를 분석한 결과에 따르면, 한국 사회의 경제적 불평등에 대한 인식 수준은 2016년부터 2020년까지 지속적으로 악화하였으며, 그 이면에는 성, 연령, 지역에 걸쳐 차별적으로 이루어진 악화 양상 및 불평등과 높은 관련성을 갖는 객관적 거시경제지표의 변화가 자리했다. 이 중 20대 여성과 30대 남성의 악화 양상이 두드러졌으며, 거시경제지표 중에서는 순자산 지니계수와 실업률이 불평등 인식과 밀접한 연동성을 보여주었다. 둘째, 경제적 불평등 인식 결정요인을 분석한 결과에 따르면, 각 요인의 효과와 크기는 해당 기간 동안 지속되기도 하고 변화하기도 하면서 한국 사회의 보편성과 특수성을 동시에 보여주었다. 예를 들어, 개인·가구 수준에서 측정된 주관적 요인(예. 주관적 계층의식)과 사회·국가 수준에서 측정된 객관적 요인(예. 계층이동 가능성)의 효과는 꾸준한 지속성을 보였으나, 이데올로기, 미디어 노출, 연령 변수의 효과는 한국의 특수한 사회정치적 맥락을 반영한 유의미한 변화를 보여주었다. 한국 사회의 경제적 불평등 인식 추이와 결정요인의 효과 변화를 체계적으로 분석한 본 연구를 통해, 경제적 불평등 인식과 현실에 대한 보다 심도 있는 학술적·정책적 논의가 이어지길 기대한다.
