This study aims to analyze overseas cases of joint venture universities, which represent the most advanced form of overseas expansion for higher education institutions, and to derive implications for Korean universities' international expansion. To this end, the study examines the models and concepts of joint ventures in higher education and analyzes cases such as Monash Malaysia University, a joint venture between Australia and Malaysia, and Duke Kunshan University, a joint venture between the United States and China, to draw insights for Korean higher education institutions. The analysis reveals that joint venture universities serve as a potential method for educating students in many developing countries who are unable to attend top domestic or international universities. It also shows that joint venture universities are a forward-looking educational cooperation project worth considering for Korean universities, which place a high value on internationalization. For successful joint ventures, it is essential to conduct thorough and extensive research not only on foreign university partners but also on the local education market and regulations. Establishing an independent legal entity and creating a governance system where all decisions are made through consensus is necessary to navigate the differences in culture and institutional environments.
