본 논문은 기후 위기와 이주 그리고 난민 현상에 주목하며, 국가와 사회, 인종과 계급의 불평등한 구조를 작품에 표상하는 아르고스 콜렉티브(Collectif Argos)의 〈기후 난민 Climate Refugees〉(2004-2010) 프로젝트에 중점을 두어 이를 사회적 실천과 예술적 협업이란 측면에서 비평적으로 고찰한다. 콜렉티브 구성원들은 다큐멘터리 저널리즘에 종사하거나 혹은 몸담았던 사진작가, 저술가, 사운드/오디오 전문가, 영상 촬영가 등으로 이루어졌고, 이들은 전 지구적 환경 변화와 그것이 인류에게 미치는 영향을 보여주기 위해 위험지대를 직접 찾아 그곳의 상황을 언론과 미디어를 통해 드러내며, 전시와 출판을 포함한 다양한 프로젝트를 전개하고 있다.

〈기후 난민〉 프로젝트에는 지리적 스펙트럼을 포괄하는 다양한 기후 이주 사례가 포함되어 있다. 투발루와 몰디브의 해수면 상승에서 미국의 뉴올리언스를 위협했던 허리케인, 차드의 사막화 현상, 그리고 알래스카의 영구 동토층 파괴와 해빙에 이르기까지 아르고스 콜렉티브는 기후 환경 변화가 인간 이주에 미치는 영향을 탐구한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 기후 환경 위기에 대한 지적 활동과 예술가의 실천이 우리의 인식 전환에 기여한다면, 이는 과연 어떠한 방식으로 우리에게 영향을 줄 수 있는지 아르고스 콜렉티브의 프로젝트를 통해 살펴본다.

This paper focuses on Collectif Argos’ Climate Refugees (2004-2010), which represents the unequal structures of nation, society, race, and class that contribute to the climate crisis, migration, and refugee phenomena. The Collectif Argos contain photographers, writers, sound/audio experts, and film makers engaged in documentary journalism who, to show global environmental changes and their impact on humans, visit hazardous areas to expose the conditions before presenting their findings in various projects, including exhibitions and publications. It also critically examines the project in terms of social practice and artistic collaboration.

The Climate Refugee includes a variety of climate migration cases spanning different geographical locations. From rising sea levels in Tuvalu and the Maldives to hurricanes threatening New Orleans in the United States, desertification in Chad, and permafrost destruction and thawing in Alaska, Collectif Argos explores the impact of climate change on human migration. Thus this research examines, through Collectif Argos’ project, whether, and in what ways, intellectual activities and artists’ practices regarding the climate and environmental crisis can affect us and contribute to changing our perceptions.
