While references to animals can be found in many areas of conventional law, "the animal" as such is unknown in international law. Instead, broad human interests shape its legal categorization, resulting in international law having no unified concept of "animal," even as science increasingly recognizes animal sentience. Beyond explaining the foundations, purposes, and implementation of norms relating to animals, this work explores the anthropocentric nature of law and invites reflection on how law treats non-human life.
